About our company

On August 11, 1911, Hawaii's first insurance company was born. Nearly a century later, First Insurance Company of Hawaii is a full-service insurance carrier offering a range of both property and commercial insurance products to the Hawaii market. Although we operate autonomously, we are affiliated with two of the world's largest insurance companies, CNA Financial Corp. and the Tokio Marine and NIchido Fire Insurance Company, Ltd.

We currently employ over 300 employees in our headquarters in Honolulu. Our goal over the next ten years is to significantly increase our volume of quality business and to recruit the next generation of leaders.

First Insurance Company strives to create career opportunities in a variety of disciplines to help perpetuate our leadership position in the business community. Career opportunities are available in underwriting, loss control, claims adjusting, finance, information systems, and actuarial. Hands-on training programs in each of these disciplines allows individuals to learn quickly. Opportunities for advancement to more challenging positions are closely tied to applied knowledge and initiative. A capsule listing of the job groups is presented below:

• Underwriting
  Underwriters make decisions about what business the company will write. They gather information about the account being offered and how much risk it presents, and then offer a program and price to meet the account's needs. Their decisions affect the business being written, and ultimately, the success of the company.
  
  
• Loss Control
  Loss Control Consultants are the engineers of the business. They work closely with commercial policyholders to minimize risks at the work sites. They help companies establish safety programs and provide underwriters with field information to aid in the decision-making process.
  
  
• Claims Adjusting
  Claims Adjusters make an insurance policy tangible. When a loss occurs, a policyholder expects to be compensated fairly and promptly. It is the Claims Adjuster's job to investigate claims and assure both the policyholder and the company are protected.
  
  
• Finance
  Accountants are responsible for assuring that there are adequate reserve funds available to cover claims obligations. Corporate accounting positions are involved with both short- and long-range planning and play an integral role in the success of the organization.
  
  
• Information Systems
  Automation is the key to keeping insurance costs down and making all functions more efficient. Working closely with user departments and insurance agencies, programmers design systems that provide vital information in the most timely and accurate form. Providing employees and key customers with electronic links vastly improves communication.
  
  
• Actuarial
  Actuaries are highly trained in analytical and statistical techniques in order to provide accurate predictions of insurance risk exposures. Through the utilization of mathematical models, they are able to help ensure that both rates and reserves are adequate to keep the company both stable and competitive.
