Our kupuna have fed us, loved us, and supported us. To celebrate their contributions to our lives and Hawaii as a whole, First Insurance Company of Hawaii, Ltd. (FICOH) is launching a “Family Favorites Recipe Contest” highlighting the favorite local dishes our parents and grandparents have prepared for us over the years.
Beef stew, pasteles, cornbread, gandule rice, spaghetti. If you have a favorite dish your kupuna made for you—a dish that brings back fond memories of your childhood—we want to know about it. Dig through your family’s old recipes and submit your favorite on FICOH’s “Family Favorites Recipe Contest” form on our Facebook page (@firstinshi) from July 2–August 20, 2018.
The staff of Crave at the Honolulu Star-Advertiser will select the winning recipe. The submitter of the winning recipe will win a $100 gift card from Foodland and have their family’s recipe printed in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. In addition, FICOH will donate $100 on the winner’s behalf to Hawaii Meals on Wheels (HMOW), which has served as a source of nutrition and social check-ins for homebound seniors on Oahu for nearly 40 years.
The recipe contest is the finale to FICOH’s Malama Our Kupuna fundraising campaign, happening now through September 20, 2018. To participate in meeting the needs of our kupuna, simply visit FICOH’s Facebook page and comment on any Malama Our Kupuna post with a favorite food memory relating to a senior. For each comment, FICOH will donate $10 to HMOW, up to $20,000.
FICOH has an enduring relationship with HMOW. Its employees have been volunteering during their lunch breaks to deliver meals for HMOW every Thursday and Friday for the past 10-plus years. To learn more about HMOW, including how you can become a volunteer and make a difference in the lives of Oahu’s kupuna, visit their website.
