More than 100 community nonprofit organizations and projects benefited in 2017 from financial contributions from First Insurance Company of Hawaii (FICOH) and through volunteer hours donated by its employees. First Insuranceʻs philanthrophic donations last year surpassed $700,000 and its employees’ volunteer hours exceeded 2,000 hours.
Among the organizations receiving financial donations were: the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, Aloha United Way, Easter Seals, the Hawaii Foodbank, Make a Wish, the Honolulu Museum of Art and The Salvation Army. The First Community Action Team (known as First CAT) volunteered their time for the Institute for Human Services, American Red Cross of Hawaii, Special Olympics, and Hawaii Meals on Wheels (HMoW), to name a few.
During the past 11 years, FICOH employees have been volunteering their lunch breaks to deliver meals for HMoW every Thursday and Friday, which amounts to approximately 800 meals delivered by FICOH employees per year. FICOH is currently conducting a “Malama Our Kupuna” campaign on its Facebook page to benefit HMoW. The campaign’s goal is to raise $20,000 (or enough funds to sponsor 1,250 meals for homebound seniors on Oahu) by September 20, 2018. “Contributing to our community is part of our business philosophy ‘To Be a Good Company,’” said Jeff Shonka, FICOH President and CEO. “It’s our mission to support local organizations that strive to improve Hawaii's future.”
