If you’re looking for a stable and rewarding career path, consider a job in the insurance sector. The insurance industry is a major source of employment, and insurance careers offer many unique advantages. February is Insurance Careers Month, and it’s the perfect time to consider whether an insurance position could be a good fit for you.
A Stable Career
Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) shows that the insurance industry employs more than 3 million people as of December 2025.
Although employment trends are subject to the ebb and flow of the economy, the insurance sector remains resilient overall. Even in times of uncertainty and hardship, families and businesses need insurance, and that creates demand for insurance professionals.
Insurance professionals also enjoy:
- A low unemployment rate. In December 2025, the unemployment rate for the insurance industry was just 3.0%, below the average national unemployment rate of 4.4%.
- A promising outlook. BLS predicts a 4% growth rate for insurance sales agents between 2024 and 2034, resulting in 21,100 additional positions.
- A safe work environment. Many insurance professionals work in an office setting or even from home, contributing to a low rate of work-related injuries and illnesses.
When you put all of this together, it’s hard to beat the stability of the insurance sector.
Multiple Career Paths
Many different companies and careers fall under the umbrella of the insurance sector. Insurance professionals may work for carriers, agencies, claims adjusting firms or even insurance technology vendors. There are also different types of insurance: personal, commercial, property, casualty, life and health.
The variety means you have lots of options.
- Do you like working with people? Insurance sales could be a good fit.
- Want to be in charge of your own career? Consider opening your own insurance agency.
- Are you highly analytical and detail-focused? You might enjoy a career in insurance underwriting.
- Do you enjoy solving problems and taking on new challenges? Insurance claims could be a good match for you.
If you’re not sure which type of insurance role is right for you, that’s okay. Many people transition from one side of insurance to another, gaining a deeper understanding of insurance while finding the best fit for their personal strengths.
Purpose-Driven Work
After a car crash, storm, fire, burglary, or lawsuit, insurance can help people pick up the pieces and get back on track. Insurance professionals are in a unique position to help families and businesses protect the things that matter most to them, and this alone can make insurance a very rewarding career.
Insurance companies often participate in philanthropic efforts, such as fundraising for nonprofit organizations and organizing volunteer work. A report from McKinsey & Company found that the insurance industry gave approximately $560 to $600 million in the form of cash, grants and other donations between 2015 and 2019.
